ArcaOS 5.0 available

Post by tomleem »

There is a newer version of OS/2 warp - eComStation out called ArcaOS. It is at version 5.0.
https://www.arcanoae.com/
It is not free. I do find it interesting and will be trying it out. I used OS/2 Warp and eComStation in the past.

Hi, Mr tomleem
Though this is ReactOS forum I am still going to reply to you post because of the fact that OS/2 is a brother of MS Windows.

But as ReactOS is a Libre and Open Source Software.
So lets talk about a LOSS alternative of OS/2.
Here is a link to osFree which has similar goals like ReactOS.
But their compatibility target is OS/2.
This page has got information on similar projects(including ReactOS!!!) like osFree.

That's all.

Tell us about how is ArcaOS compared to OS/2.

Note: I have never used OS/2. But I feel for it because of Windows connection.

osFree
They have called their boot loader FreeLdr!

So who was the first to use the name Freeldr and therefore have the right to use the name?

There is a lot of information here freeldr:history, which I have not read.
Please keep the Windows classic 9x/2000 look and feel.
The layman's guides - debugging - bug reporting - compiling - ISO remaster.
They may help you with a problem, so do have a look at them.

I don't know who used it, as a name, first.
But ReactOS's bootloader is called FreeLoader (Sometimes
FreeLdr).
This page confirms it.
So, I don't think that there is any naming issue.

First commit of ReactOS FreeLdr by Brian Palmer.

Before that the ReactOS used to use a DOS-based bootloader:

This is in the Off Topic section of the forum; for subjects / posts that are not related to ReactOS, even though there are posts here that are ReactOS related.

ArcaOS is similar to eComStation in that it is an updated version of OS/2 Warp using its kernel. eComStation does not seem to be developed any more. Arca Noae is taking up the development of the updated Warp OS and it is currently being updated by them.

Those questions can be also answered at the OS/2 Warp forum.

I believe it can run OS/2 Warp 4.52 programs.
I am not sure about ported Linux programs.
I believe ArcaOS 5.0 is for regular desktops.

You purchased a commercial product and it's malfunctioning -- that probably means you should talk to their support.
Without much research, https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/reporting ... practices/ seems appropriate. I don't think anyone here is going to be an expert on the topic.

As Managing Member of Arca Noae, LLC, I should point out that we do not, in fact, provide official support anywhere except through our Mantis bug tracking system. Discussions on third party sites (OS/2 World, Yahoo Groups, etc.) are not considered official support, and are not likely to be seen by relevant personnel.

If any issues arise while using ArcaOS while covered under our Support & maintenance subscription, please open a ticket there (https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/reporting ... practices/).

ArcaOS is not installable from an USB flash drive. It seems a lot of the computers do not have an optical flash drive.
