Philosophies, Metaphors, and ReactOS Parallels

Post by PurpleGurl »

This thread is open to any philosophy, metaphor, or analogy/parallel that relates to ReactOS.

1. "Nobody has implemented the right form of socialism yet, and my type of socialism is different! If everyone were to just do it my way..."

A number of folks coming to our ReactOS forums and trying to push Linux into the mix are much like those pushing socialism/communism. The version around here is, "Nobody's tried MY idea for a Windows-Linux (or ReactOS-Linux) hybrid yet!" Nobody has really ever gotten such a chimera to work, and yet this mythical ideal that you can make a program that can run every Linux and Windows program and use every possible Linux and WIndows driver still exists.

2. "There are many shades of gender variance, and transsexual folks should just face up to that fact and realize they are not cisgender and join their rightful place in the transgender community."

Applied to us, the version is, "There are many shades of Linux, and ReactOS should just face up to the fact they are a type of Linux and join their rightful place in the Linux community."

No, ReactOS is just a home-spun variation of Windows trapped in an open source body, that strives to pass as Windows to drivers and applications, even though some critics are not pleased with how its makeup (UI) is applied.

3. "Come on, celebrate diversity. You need more women, sexual minorities, ethnic minorities, differently abled folks..."

The version here is "Come on, celebrate diversity. Let's add more Linux code to make the codebase diverse. If we could all just work together, we could finish ReactOS faster..."

4. "No one will ever have to know."

That makes its way here too in the form of, "Click the link to look at how this other project is using the leaked code and look at their sources, nobody had to know you looked at it!" Obviously, those links get removed and those posting them warned and/or removed.

If we were to start this again today, would the name still be ReactOS? The more critical or cynical voices would likely call it Schrodinger. Like Schrodinger's cat, is it alive or dead, working or crashed, Windows or not, etc.
